many people as seen from above

Oh! surveillance in the digital age:



I found this clip while trying to catch up on the latest episode of America's Next Top Model. It's quite amazing... the movement of the crowd, the perspective of the camera, the stop edits, the sound track of sirens and people screaming, the editorial commentary on the part of the video maker. All these elements come together to produce this really uncanny and seemingly choreographed document.

For some reason it reminds me of this old British Airways that I used to watch when I was a kid. It's obviously choreographed, but it also demonstrates the power of seeing the crowd as an image/form from above. I think there is something specifically modern about this gesture and it provides a unique perspective that says a lot about the act of recording,
watching, and surveying.
